Back to school time is here and every child has to deal with their backpack. The higher the grade, the heavier the backpack. One Hudson Valley organization is adding weight to backpacks that help kids on the weekend.

Before I tell you about the backpack blessing, let's deal with a serious issue. The weight of these packs can cause big problems for our children. I see my daughters lugging around backpacks that weigh at least 40 pounds. If not worn properly that can cause back problems, but according to Web MD it will not cause scoliosis.

scoliosis is not a danger. But kids' backpacks can cause back, shoulder, and neck pain when they're too heavy and worn for the better part of eight hours a day.

Make sure you child wears their pack correctly and they should be fine. Of course when they become a teen, any safety instructions you give them could be tossed out if exchange for looking cool. There is only so much a parent can do.

 

Now onto the backpack blessing. Lots of valley children may get meal assistance at school. Breakfast and lunch programs are widely available, but when the weekend comes, some students will go hungry.

The Food Bank of the Hudson Valley BackPack Program provides a backpack filled with enough food to get them through the weekend. Let's try to get the word out that those families dealing with food insecurity face the problem 7 days a week.

The BackPack Program helps alleviate child hunger by discreetly providing hungry children with backpacks full of nutritious and easy-to-prepare food on Friday afternoons so they have food to eat throughout the weekend.
