When I was a child, my dad's favorite saying was "accidents don't happen." Talk about pressure, my dad always insisted that bad things that happen could have been avoided had I, specifically, been paying attention. Which is why my dad immediately popped into my head when I had a little accident on the way to work Wednesday morning.
I love The Statue Of Liberty, probably because it was a really cool gift from France and I love France. The Copper, wrought iron and steel lady which was dedicated in 1886, stands proudly on Liberty Island in New York Harbor. The Statue of Liberty considered a symbol of freedom was designed by French artist Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, and Liberty's face is said to be modeled after Bartholdi'd mother Charlotte. Yes, but did you ever try to climb up to that face?
I rarely believe anything I read or hear, especially online. In fact I've posted several blogs debunking claims, promises and viral videos posted on Facebook and other social media. But what about things you've heard all your life, long before the internet? It turns out some of things I always assumed were true, simply are not.
I used to hate flying, until I met my husband Joe, who can fly a plane. Joe loves flying and together we've flown in small planes, with Joe at the helm and as passengers in some of the largest planes that exist. The thing is, I always imagine that something is going to go terribly wrong with the pilot and I'm going to have to land the plane.
You've probably seen the tiny house trend. There is even a reality show about the tiny homes. But did you know that here in New York, there are several super tiny towns ,(many with populations less than 300), that have a lot to offer.
On a normal garbage day, you probably drag your cans to the curb, or load your vehicle and schlep it to the dump, but what do you do if you are flying around in space? The International Space Station dumped it's garbage last week, into space.
Are you a fan of TED Talks? Do you even know what they are? If you don't, here is an intro to a world of ideas through short talks (20 minutes or less). TED, which stands for Technology, Entertainment and Design started as a conference to create a global initiative for spreading ideas, but now TED talks are available online and cover almost all topics.
Think about how much food you throw away each day, even scraps count. According to One Green Planet.org:
"The average American consumer wastes 20 pounds of food waste per month or 240 pounds per year! This amounts to almost 38 MILLION TONS of food waste that we throw away every year as individuals in this country."
But, what if you could turn those scraps into more food and it could become a project your children could get involved in, wouldn't it be fun to try?
