Local School Suspends Students’ Email Over Facebook Posts
A Hudson Valley school district went into panic mode this weekend when students started posting sensitive information online. The Times Herald Record reports that the Florida Union Free School District sprung into action after they saw students posting pictures of their class schedules online.
The schedules not only list the classes each student is taking, but it also contains computer usernames, passwords and student ID numbers. Making this information public is a security and privacy concern, so the school district immediately got involved.
Parents of the students who shared the information were alerted so they could make sure the photos were taken off of social media sites such as Facebook. The students’ Gmail accounts were also suspended so passwords could be reset. A school official told the Times Herald Record that they don’t believe the posts were malicious and that the students were probably unaware of the danger that could occur from sharing the personal information online. No disciplinary action was taken.
