Recall on Rawhide Dog Chew Products
The United Pet Group, is voluntarily recalling multiple brands of rawhide dog chew products. The group which is a division of Spectrum Brands, identified certain rawhide chew facilities outside the United States were using a quaternary ammonium compound mixtures as a processing aid in the manufacturing of rawhide chews. The compound is approved for cleaning food processing equipment, but hasn’t been approved for the production of the rawhide chew for dogs.
United Pet Group, did receive reports of pet illness, limited reports. Consumers most complained about the smell, an unpleasant odor. There were also reports of diarrhea and vomiting. According to the FDA, release, “Exposure to quaternary ammonium compounds through direct ingestion may cause the following symptoms in dogs: reduced appetite, and gastric irritation including diarrhea and vomiting. These symptoms may require treatment by a veterinarian depending on severity.”
The products were distributed to retail stores in the United State and sold online. All of the dog check products included in this recall, identify an expiration date ranging from June 01, 2019, to May 31, 2020, on the back of the package. The products subject to the recall are:
