Some Great Beaches Here in the Hudson Valley
We are getting a little taste of hot weather and it’s time to start thinking about the beach. Did you know there are some really nice beaches here in the valley?
I did a quick survey on my Facebook page asking which is the best beach in the area and got responses like : Jill A. “Good beach in the hudson valley……what a joke!!!” or this one from Greg D. “There is not a good beach around here.”
You see, lots of people don’t know about all the good swimming spots around here.
If you don’t mind taking a dip in the lake, Hudson Valley Magazine has a bunch of beaches in their latest online edition. One of the Mid Hudson’s favorites is Lake Taghkanic State Park. This is right off the Taconic Parkway about a half hour north of Poughkeepsie.
Lake Taghkanic State Park boasts two beaches with rowboat, paddleboat, and kayak rentals available, as well as picnicking and playgrounds. Want to make a weekend out of it? Rent one of the site’s four cottages
Nice sand on the beach and the place is clean. It does get crowded on the weekends, so get there early. One place that is not a beach, but worth a mention is Peekamoose Blue Hole in the Roundout Creek. There is no beach, but this is considered one of the best swimming holes in America.
Lots of other sandy beaches in the area: Wilcox Memorial State Park in Milan, Sylvan Lake in Hopewell Junction, Clarence Fahnestock Memorial State Park in Carmel is not far from Southern Dutchess County. I used to go there all the time when I lived in Fishkill. The beach was pretty big with good sand. The park offers lots of hiking, biking, boating and camping.
Don’t forget the man made beach at Splashdown Beach Waterpark! The place is a blast and they have tons of sand near the giant wave pool. Lots of slides and great food, plus you can relax in your own private cabana. Mix 977 will be at Splashdown every week during the summer, so come by and see us there.
When I was a kid, my Dad used to take us to Lake Welch in Harriman State Park. I haven’t been there since, but this summer I plan to go back. The beach is huge and sandy. I do remember it getting really crowded on the weekend, but if you can sneak away during the week, I bet it’s really nice.

Lots of places in Ulster County like the beach at Belleayre Mountain and Kingston Point Beach on the Hudson River. Sure we don’t get the waves of the Jersey shore, but if you need to cool off and put your toes in the sand, you can do it right here in the Hudson Valley.
I know I didn’t mention them all. What is your favorite beach in the Hudson Valley? Please let us know on our Facebook page and enjoy the summer!
